Today, the Municipal Clerk's Office announced that the online portal to register short-term rentals is now open: https://www.muni.org/str.
Short-term rentals currently in operation (including previously permitted bed & breakfasts) will have until July 30, 2026 to register using the free, online application portal. Approved by the Anchorage Assembly in December 2025, AO 2025-115(S-2) requires short-term rental listings and advertisements to include a municipal registration number, regardless of platform by July 31, 2026.
In addition to a current State of Alaska business license, the registration form requires the following information to complete:
The Municipal Clerk's Office will review and approve applications in the order in which they are received. Upon approval, short-term rental owners will be assigned a municipal "STR" number unique to the unit in the form of a registration certificate issued via email. Beginning July 31, 2026, short term rentals will not be legally allowed to post listings or advertisements on any platform without the associated municipal STR number.
A short-term rental is defined in municipal code as a furnished dwelling unit that is rented out for compensation on a temporary basis to a single person or group for fewer than 30 consecutive days. Learn more about the new requirements for short-term rentals and how to register on the Municipal Clerk's Office website at https://www.muni.org/str.
