Nevada Counties - Caltrans is alerting motorists about extended lane closures for paving operations over the next six weeks along State Route 20 (SR 20) starting next week as part of a $34.6 million pavement rehabilitation project.
Extended lane closures are scheduled around the clock in two-mile segments starting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 22.
Motorists can expect delays between 15 and 20 minutes. Construction activity will pause Friday morning and resume the following Sunday night.
Paving will begin near Dow Street, working in the eastbound lane toward the junction with Interstate 80 (I-80), grinding during the night and repaving during the day. Once crews reach I-80, they will turn around and work in the westbound lane along SR 20. Paving operations are expected to be completed by early August.
The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather conditions, material availability, or other unexpected events.
Knife River Construction of Chico is the prime contractor for the project, which is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2027. Once complete, the project will extend the service life of the existing pavement and improve ride quality on nearly 26 miles of highway between Nevada City and the junction with I-80.
Additional work includes preserving and restoring existing drainage systems and bringing transportation management system elements, guardrail and roadway signs up to current standards.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to "Be Work Zone Alert" and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
