Sioux Falls residents can begin disposing of leaves and branches for free Sept. 12, when the City of Sioux Falls opens two seasonal drop sites. The sites will remain open through Nov. 29. Both sites are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The leaf and branch drop sites are available to residents of Sioux Falls and the five-county region served by the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill: Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha and Turner counties.
The sites are located at:
"Fall cleanup is a good opportunity for residents to take care of leaves and branches before winter," said Don Kuper, sanitary landfill superintendent for the city. "These seasonal drop sites provide a convenient, free option for residents to properly dispose of those materials while keeping them out of the landfill waste stream."
The sites are for residential use only. Cars, pickups, full-size SUVs, vans and trailers are accepted. Lawn service companies and commercial businesses may not use the sites and must take materials directly to the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill.
Residents must secure all loads with a tarp or transport materials in an enclosed vehicle.
Residents must place branches and leaves in separate piles. Signs at each site will indicate where to unload each material. Residents must remove all materials from plastic bags before unloading. Paper bags are accepted.
Plastic bags, stumps, rubble and household garbage are not accepted.
Christmas tree drop sites
Later this year, the city will open seasonal drop sites for real Christmas trees, wreaths and garland. The sites will open Dec. 26.
Hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The city will announce additional details about the Christmas tree drop sites closer to the opening date.
