In Kadriorg today, President Alar Karis was presented with the letters of credentials of Australian ambassador Edmund Gabriel Mortimer, Dominican Republic ambassador Lourdes Margarita Franco-Zimmermann and Rwandan ambassador Lambert Dushimimana.
In meetings with the ambassadors, the head of state discussed opportunities for bolstering bilateral relations, as well as the escalating security situation in the Middle East and Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
In his discussions with the Australian ambassador, President Karis confirmed that Estonia and Australia share an understanding of the common security threats in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. "Our two countries are very like-minded on virtually all global matters," he remarked.
The head of state thanked Australia for its ongoing support for Ukraine, highlighting excellent cooperation and exchange of information to thwart the operations of Russia's shadow fleet and the country's evasion of sanctions. Potential partnerships on digital and cyber projects and in the fields of critical minerals and investments were also discussed during the meeting.
Upon meeting with the Dominican Republic ambassador, President Karis spoke about relations between the Caribbean region and the EU and cooperation in the areas of tourism and digital and cyber issues, which both agreed could be deepened. The ambassador presented the head of state with an invitation from her own president to visit the Dominican Republic and the wider region.
At his meeting with the Rwandan ambassador, President Karis said that despite being separated by a considerable geographical distance, Estonia and Rwanda are digitally very closely connected. He noted that both countries consider education and digital solutions to be very important, creating a solid basis for cooperation. The head of state also touched on security, emphasising that Estonia condemns any use of force to undermine the territorial integrity of another state.
The Australian and Dominican Republic ambassadors are based in Stockholm, while the Rwandan ambassador resides in the Hague.
