U.S. Senator Katie Britt Directly Secures $4 Million for Critical Montgomery Road Project

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Chair of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security Appropriations, recently directly secured $4 million for a key Montgomery road project in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Homeland Security Appropriations Act. This appropriations funding will support the Maxwell Capital Gateway Project, the primary gateway connecting Interstate 65 to Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, which serves thousands of military personnel, civilian employees, students, contractors, and visitors.

Specifically, the $4 million secured by Senator Britt will be used for roadway and bridge improvements to Washington Ferry Road from US-31 to the Rear Access Gate Entrance at Maxwell Air Force Base. The project will include regrading the existing ditches, shoulder clipping, and resurfacing the existing 22-foot roadway from US-31 to the existing bridge at West End Ditch. The existing bridge will be modified to replace the outside deck panels to retrofit the bridge with new concrete barrier rails.

"I'm proud to have directly secured $4 million in FY26 Homeland Security Appropriations funding," said Senator Britt. "This investment will not only improve Washington Ferry Road and access to Maxwell Air Force Base, but it will also enhance the safety, efficiency, and responsiveness of natural disaster operations. From supporting military readiness to enabling faster disaster response across the Southeast, I'm thrilled to see funding directed toward projects that will strengthen infrastructure and better protect the communities we serve."

"Public safety begins with a resilient foundation. This $4 million in federal funding allows us to address essential roadway and bridge improvements that ensure our first responders can move efficiently and our neighborhoods remain connected. I want to thank Senator Britt for recognizing Montgomery's infrastructure needs and helping us build a safer, more accessible city," said Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.

Maxwell Air Force Base serves as a crucial economic driver in the state, generating more than $2.6 billion in economic impact annually and supporting over 15,000 direct and indirect jobs throughout the River Region. It is the Air Force's primary center for education, leadership development, and cyber operations. The project would establish a direct connection between I-65 and the base, in turn improving access, reducing congestion, and modernizing critical transportation infrastructure that will support the Department of War's overall mission.

Beyond its military impact, the project delivers substantial benefits to the broader Montgomery community. Enhanced connectivity will improve quality of life for military personnel, civilian employees, and their families, reinforcing Montgomery's commitment to workforce recruitment and retention. The corridor also creates opportunities for commercial, technology, and defense-related development, supporting emerging national security priorities. The project is a strategic investment in Alabama's standing as a key player in our national defense and economic prosperity.

This roadway will also provide access for FEMA to stage and deploy resources for national disasters that occur in Alabama and throughout the southeastern United States. These improvements would increase the efficiency of time-sensitive responses to safely transport goods, medical equipment, and military assistance to impacted communities.

In total, Senator Britt directly secured more than $14.97 million for Alabama in FY26 Homeland Security appropriations funding.
