Geosciences experts appear on Idaho Matters

Professor Jennifer Pierce from the Department of Geosciences and Robby Jost (MS geophysics, 2027) joined the Idaho Matters podcast on August 27, 2026 to offer their expertise on debris flows.

The geosciences researchers drew parellels between flash flooding near Grandjean, Idaho in July 2026 and the devastating flash flood that struck Nepal in August.

Pierce studies post-fire debris flows, especially in Idaho around the region burned by the Wapiti Fire in 2024. Burn scars from wildfire weaken the systems that keep hillsides in place, making dangerous debris flows more likely.
