Interpol’s Daniel Kessler Recalls Hilarious Moment David Bowie Was Denied Backstage Entry

Interpol guitarist Daniel Kessler will never forget the night David Bowie unexpectedly showed up backstage at one of the band's concerts - especially because he was initially denied entry.

During an appearance on the Broken Record podcast, Kessler recalled playing New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom in the early 2000s when the band's tour manager stopped an unexpected visitor at the backstage door.

"Sorry, mate, you can't come in," Kessler remembered him saying before hearing the visitor respond, "But I'm David Bowie."

Once the tour manager realized who was standing there, Kessler said he quickly got out of the way and let the music legend inside.

According to Kessler, Bowie was "super affable" and "really kind" and stopped by before the show because he needed to get home early and wouldn't be able to meet the band afterward.

Kessler admitted the encounter stunned the group. "I don't think you can do any better," he said, calling Bowie "one of the great artists of our times."
