UNM-Taos adjunct instructor George M. Ackerman has released a new children's book, I Love You, Grandma Sharon!, inspired by his mother's journey with Parkinson's disease.
The book follows the bond between a grandmother and her granddaughter, Brooke, as they navigate the challenges and emotions that come with the illness. Written for children ages 3 and up, the story helps young readers understand what a loved one's Parkinson's diagnosis can look like, what they may see, feel and wonder, through a compassionate and accessible narrative. The book aims to support families, caregivers and individuals affected by Parkinson's disease by offering a story-driven way to begin difficult conversations.
Ackerman teaches college courses in criminal justice, business and law and has focused much of his work on Parkinson's disease advocacy. He founded TogetherForSharon.com in memory of his mother, Sharon Riff Ackerman, to promote awareness, education and research toward a cure. His outreach includes participating in charity events, speaking to community and government groups, leading caregiving and loss support groups, and interviewing people living with Parkinson's, researchers and advocates.
"As a son, father and advocate, I still have trouble explaining what happened to my children's grandmother due to Parkinson's disease," Ackerman said. "I hope this book helps paint a clearer picture of that journey for families."
Ackerman donates 100% of the book's proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support Parkinson's research.
"We sadly lost my mother to Parkinson's in 2020, but I continue to fight for those still battling the disease," he said. "I'll be in Washington, D.C., again this March advocating on their behalf. I also had the honor of meeting Michael J. Fox a few months ago. As he continues his own battle with Parkinson's, he remains a true hero of mine in advocacy."
