Treasurer Briner Returns Over $47,000 in Unclaimed Property to the United Way of the Greater Triangle

Raleigh, N.C.

North Carolina State Treasurer Brad Briner presented a check for $47,197.25 in unclaimed property to the United Way of the Greater Triangle on Thursday at the organization's headquarters. CEO Jeffery Howell and staff were on hand to receive the funds that originated from donations, vendor refunds and other financial assets.

"Giving money back to an organization that gives so much to our community is truly rewarding," said Briner. "Returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners is one of our most important responsibilities. We are pleased to reunite United Way of the Greater Triangle with these funds so they can continue serving and supporting communities across our region."

The funds were identified through the Department of State Treasurer's Unclaimed Property Division, which administers the NC Cash program. Through NC Cash, individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations can reclaim money and other assets which have been turned over to the state for safekeeping after owners could not be located.

"United Way Greater Triangle is committed to advancing community-driven solutions that help children succeed, families stabilize and neighborhoods thrive," said Howell. "We appreciate NC Cash for helping return these funds so they can be put back to work in our community."

North Carolinians can search for unclaimed property free of charge at NCCash.gov. More than $1 billion in unclaimed property is currently waiting to be claimed.

About NC Cash:
Unclaimed Property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds, and contents of safe deposit boxes that typically have been abandoned for one to five years. Funds become unclaimed because the company loses track of the consumer, due to an incorrect address or other missing information. By law, these funds are escheated, or turned over, to the Department of State Treasurer for safekeeping until claimed.

How Do I Search and Claim My Cash?
Visit NCCash.gov to enter your name or business name. If your name and current or prior address appears in the results, you can file a claim for your unclaimed property.
