WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29) voted "NO" on S.2 - Republicans' spending bill that provides an additional $70 billion to fund the Trump Administration's cruel and inhumane Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while failing to address the rising cost of living for working families.
"Republicans' reckless budget gives ICE an additional $70 billion to terrorize our communities and does nothing to lower the cost of living for families in the San Fernando Valley and across the country," said Congresswoman Rivas. "Republicans caused an affordability crisis has already cost my constituents over $3,000 in additional costs for necessities, close to $6 per gallon for gas, and leaves almost 60,000 constituents at risk of losing healthcare coverage. The spending bill Republicans are pushing through does nothing to alleviate my constituents' financial worries.
"Additionally, this $70 billion in funding is on top of the $140 billion for ICE and CPB in last year's Big Ugly Law. My constituents are terrified to leave their house because of the trauma ICE agents have inflicted across our community. ICE should not be thrown more money - it should be abolished.
"My constituents routinely tell me they want the Republican-controlled Congress to address two things: to get ICE off our streets and to make life more affordable.
"The Republicans' bill does neither."
Background:
S. 2 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 214-212. Congresswoman Luz Rivas voted "NO" on S. 2, the Republicans' spending bill that will provide $70 billion in funding to ICE on top of the $140 billion already provided by Republicans.
The bill specifically provides $350 million for ICE to conduct their cruel deportation activities in localities that are not cooperating with the Administration's inhumane mass deportation agenda.
