On April 18-19, a Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region (CPAR) was held in Fairbanks, Alaska. Elected representatives from the Nordic countries, the United States, Canada, and the European Parliament gathered there, along with representatives of the Nordic Council, the West Nordic Council, Indigenous peoples, scientists, and officials to discuss changes in the environment, technology, and politics in the Arctic.
The committee elected a new chair for the next two years, Swedish MP Alexandra Anstrell. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski was re-elected as vice chair of the committee and also served as host of the conference.
A joint declaration was adopted reaffirming a commitment to peaceful cooperation, sustainable development, and the well-being of Arctic inhabitants. Emphasis was placed on the importance of maintaining the Arctic as a region of dialogue, stability, and cooperation, and on ensuring that the perspectives of Indigenous peoples guide decision-making. Strong support was also expressed for the work of the Arctic Council.
The program featured speeches and presentations by experts on research, energy, climate, and security. Emphasis was placed on the importance of reliable and environmentally friendly energy solutions suited to Arctic conditions, as well as increased cooperation on infrastructure development and emergency preparedness.
