DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement marking the start of Immigrant Heritage Month:
"America has always been, and will always be, a nation of immigrants. From the earliest pilgrims seeking religious freedom, to the migrants and asylum seekers who make the heart-wrenching decision to escape violence and persecution, America has a proud tradition of welcoming those who seek a better life. Should anyone forget that history - or worse, seek to erase it - they need only to recall the words engraved below the Statue of Liberty:
Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free
"While Republicans demonize immigrants and stoke fear by flooding our streets with masked federal agents, Democrats will always stand up for immigrant communities when they are under attack. From building our infrastructure to driving scientific and cultural innovation, generations of immigrants have been the backbone of America's prosperity and progress. We will continue to pursue compassionate, effective, and common-sense policies that keep families safe, honor our values, and ensure that America continues to shine as a beacon of hope for the next 250 years."
