Following Dire Warnings from AI Researchers, Rosen Calls on Senate Commerce Committee to Immediately Hold Hearing with Top AI Executives

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released a statement calling on U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Chairman Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) to promptly convene a hearing with testimony from top executives of leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies on the dangers posed by the pace of AI development and the guardrails needed to keep Americans safe. Senator Rosen's call comes following a warning from a former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher regarding humans' diminishing ability to control AI models, and a united endorsement of increased guardrails on the industry from Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and xAI's Elon Musk.

"Artificial intelligence has extraordinary potential to solve complex problems across sectors, contribute to scientific breakthroughs, and improve humans' quality of life. At the same time, this powerful technology can have the power to cause catastrophic damages if we don't act to impose guardrails and safety mechanisms," said Senator Rosen. "Congress must do everything in its power to ensure the American AI industry continues to lead, particularly outcompeting China, and also enact increased guardrails to ensure AI development is progressing in a safe and responsible manner. This is why I'm calling on Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz to immediately hold a hearing on this matter with the top executives of American leading AI companies."

As a former computer programmer and member of the Senate Commerce Committee, Senator Rosen has consistently pushed for responsible development of technology and has raised questions about the risks of AI. In a committee hearing last fall, she pressed a Trump Administration official about the Administration's decision to deploy Grok, an AI bot with a documented history of antisemitism. Senator Rosen raised concerns to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about surveillance pricing - the use of AI by corporations to target individuals with different prices for the same product - and called on the FTC to do more to fully understand how large retailers are using technology to hurt consumers' budgets. Senator Rosen has also introduced a bipartisan bill to prohibit the use of DeepSeek - an AI platform with ties to the Chinese Community Party - on all government devices and networks to protect American national security.
