Statement on the announcement of an Israel-Gaza Ceasefire

Béatrice Butsana-Sita, Chief Executive Officer of the British Red Cross said:

"This ceasefire agreement is an important moment and a chance to end the relentless suffering across the region. It will provide hope and respite to people who have been living through unimaginable pain and trauma.

"The humanitarian needs in Gaza remain catastrophic. The Palestine Red Crescent Society along with the wider Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have been on the ground from the moment the conflict escalated, providing lifesaving healthcare and aid. It is vital we now use this moment to ensure a far greater and more consistent flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

"For fifteen months, families have been torn apart, caught between hope and despair. We hope that those held hostage in Gaza will be reunited with their loved ones after experiencing so much suffering. In its vital role as a neutral intermediary, the International Committee of the Red Cross stands ready to facilitate this if requested to do so, alongside supporting the release of Palestinian detainees.

"This agreement gives people who've endured so much, the hope that they'll be able to begin rebuilding their lives and their communities. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement will continue to be there for everyone that needs us in the days, weeks, months and years ahead."
