Mobile, Ala. - Join Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis and the History Museum of Mobile for a special America 250 celebration featuring a living history re-enactment and the opening of a 50-year-old time capsule at Colonial Fort Conde on Sunday, July 5.
Starting at 4 p.m., visitors can experience a re-enactment of the Capture of James Milling - a Continental Navy officer whose actions brought the American Revolution to British-occupied Mobile. Programming includes a full reading of the Declaration of Independence, live musket demonstrations, period clothing, and audience interaction, all highlighting Mobile's unique role in the American Revolution and offering a rare glimpse into life in 1776.
"The City of Mobile is blessed to have played a part in this country's rich history," said Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis. "We're proud to celebrate that history with two wonderful events marking America's 250th birthday. These events are unique, educational, fun, and family-friendly - telling Mobile's story, and the country's story, through the eyes of people who were alive 250 years ago and those of Mobilians from 50 years ago. Join us for this one-of-a-kind celebration at Colonial Fort Conde."
At 5 p.m., visitors can watch as Mayor Cheriogotis opens the time capsule originally buried by the city in 1976. Visitors to the event can view all of the items originally buried in 1976 to celebrate the nation's bicentennial from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
