From Copper Phone Lines to High-Speed Connectivity: USTelecom Champions Network Modernization in Comments to FCC

USTelecom - The Broadband Association today filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in support of proposed reforms to accelerate the nation's transition away from outdated copper telephone networks toward modern, reliable broadband infrastructure.

In its filing, USTelecom emphasized that outdated FCC regulations that force providers to maintain antiquated copper facilities diverts billions of dollars in industry resources each year-funds that could otherwise be directed to expanding high-speed broadband and delivering innovative services consumers demand. Copper networks are also increasingly prone to theft, outages, and costly repairs, underscoring the need for regulatory reform.

"We applaud the FCC for teeing up reforms that benefit consumers by modernizing America's networks-not propping up aging systems that no longer serve their needs," said Jonathan Spalter, USTelecom President and CEO. "Americans deserve networks built for the future, not anchored to the past. By discontinuing obsolete copper infrastructure, broadband providers can invest more quickly and effectively in delivering next-generation services that are faster, more secure, and more resilient. We appreciate the FCC's leadership on this important issue."

USTelecom's filing calls on the FCC to do away with outdated rules that slow network modernization, addressing conflicting state obligations that force carriers to maintain legacy copper lines, and provide clear pathways for service providers to transition customers to superior, IP-based alternatives.
