VIDEO: Rep. Stansbury Holds Press Conference on Pending Government Shutdown

ALBUQUERQUE-Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) held a press conference today to address the looming government shutdown. Federal funding is set to expire at midnight on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Without passage of a funding bill or short-term Continuing Resolution, a shutdown will begin at 12:01 AM on Wednesday, October 1.

Rep. Stansburyoutlined the broad impacts of a shutdown, including disruptions to critical federal agency operations, threats from OMB Director Russell Vought of mass federal employee firings, and specific consequences for New Mexico.

She also highlighted the proactive response at the state level: a special legislative session called by the Governor and state leaders to address anticipated shortfalls in health care, food assistance, and public broadcasting. New Mexico is among a few states preparing state-level responses to federal inaction.

"Let me be clear: New Mexico's entire Congressional delegation is showing up for our state and the American people-despite efforts by Republican leadership to cancel votes, the President's refusal to negotiate, and threats of mass firings.

"Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives and have all but guaranteed a shutdown by refusing to negotiate in good faith.

"Democrats are fighting to keep the government open, address devastating cuts to Medicaid and heath care premiums, and abuses of Constitutional power.

"Here's what we want: keep the government open, restore Medicaid and federal health care programs, and stop Administrative overreach and mass firings of federal employees. It's that simple.

"Without action, New Mexico could face some of the deepest health care cuts in the country, affecting families and businesses.

"We're ready to work with our Republican colleagues to put communities and the American people first-because that's who we serve."
