PA Senator Vincent Hughes Announces Social Security Senate Resolution

April 1, 2025

Harrisburg, PA - April 1, 2025 -Senator Vincent Hughes has announced a concurrent resolution that addresses cuts to the Social Security Administration and harmful operational updates that are being led by Acting Commissioner Dudek and Elon Musk's DOGE. Senator Hughes encouraged Senate colleagues from both sides of the aisle to sign on to the resolution to show their commitment to delivering Social Security benefits that Pennsylvanians have earned and rely on.

Over 2.9 million Pennsylvanians receive over $62 billion a year in Social Security benefits, making the program a multi-billion-dollar economic driver in the Commonwealth. Of those PA recipients, about 150,000 are children and over 660,000 have been lifted above the poverty line because of Social Security.

Social Security is the primary source of income for about 40% of older Americans.

"Social Security is a lifeline for millions of Pennsylvanians, and it is under assault," said Senator Hughes. "What we're seeing is an effort to decimate the system, make it harder for folks to get their checks, put the system in question, and then try to tear it down completely. We need to rise up and push back against that assault."

Senator Hughes continued, "This program impacts the lives of recipients and the economies those folks spend in to. We're talking about billions of dollars that support households and our communities. I'm hoping that Democrats and Republicans all get on board with this resolution to advocate for the Social Security system."

The co-sponsorship memo for the resolution can be viewed online here. Senator Hughes' full remarks introducing the resolution can be viewed online here.
