Ohio's Worst Kept Secret: Republican AG Dave Yost Officially Launches Gubernatorial Campaign

January 23, 2025

Columbus, Ohio- Today, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost officially announced his run for governor of Ohio. This announcement comes after a long series of teaser trailers and tweets that reveals Yost's desperation to quickly jump in a primary that is getting messier by the day. As he runs for our state's highest office, here's what voters need to know.

As Attorney General, he's put extreme policies first and Ohioans last. Last November, Ohioans overwhelmingly passed an amendment enshrining reproductive rights into our state constitution. But, Yost appealed a court decision striking down Ohio's extreme six week abortion ban as unconstitutional under the amendment that voters passed. It's clear that Yost would rather kneecap abortion rights for Ohioans instead of listening to the voters or passing policies that actually improve their lives

He'll say or do anything to fit his own narrative, without a second thought about the harm it could cause. After a ten year old girl was forced to travel to get an abortion due to the abortion ban he helped pass, Yost openly doubted her existence on national television. He even doubled down on his comments. An arrest in the case was made days later.

Finally, Yost is no exception to the deep rooted corruption seen in so many of his Republican colleagues. Despite pretending to be tough on FirstEnergy, Yost negotiated sweetheart deals directly with the company to avoid prosecution and pay just a fraction of the original fines they were facing. Yost could've gotten justice for Ohioans who are still paying for this corruption. Instead, he gave them a slap on the wrist.

"At every turn, Yost has ignored Ohio voters at the expense of special interests and extremists in his party. Now, he wants the same voters he ignored to send him to our state's highest office," said Ohio Democratic Party spokeswoman Katie Seewer. "Yost said he's ready to offer voters a choice, and we're ready to make sure Ohioans don't choose him."
