Spring has arrived at Georgia College & State University, and the seasonal blooms have made our campus even more beautiful. As you take advantage of warmer weather, outdoor events and time with friends, keep safety at the forefront. Awareness is not seasonal - it's a daily practice.

Below are this month's Safety & Awareness priorities:

1️⃣ Situational Awareness Never Goes on Break

Spring brings increased foot traffic, outdoor studying and campus gatherings.

• Limit distractions while walking (reduce headphone volume and phone use).
• Walk in well-lit, populated areas after dark.
• Trust your instincts - if something feels off, create distance and seek assistance immediately.

DPS Reminder: Save Campus Police in your phone and use available safety escort services when needed.

2️⃣ Travel Smart During Spring Break

Whether traveling home or out of town, preparation matters.

• Share your itinerary with a trusted contact.
• Secure valuables in vehicles and lodging.
• Avoid real-time social media posts that advertise your location.
• Never leave drinks unattended - watch out for your friends.

Proactive planning reduces risk and prevents reactive decisions.

3️⃣ Secure Your Property

Warmer weather often leads to open windows and unsecured doors.

• Lock residence hall and apartment doors - even for short trips.
• Do not prop open secured campus buildings.
• Register bicycles and use quality locks.
• Remove valuables from vehicles or keep them out of sight.

Most crimes of opportunity occur when access is easy. Small habits make a significant difference.

4️⃣ Hydration, Heat & Outdoor Safety

Spring in Milledgeville can transition quickly from comfortable to hot.

• Stay hydrated during outdoor activities and intramurals.
• Use sunscreen and protective eyewear.
• Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion.
• Monitor weather alerts before extended outdoor plans.

Physical wellness directly supports personal safety.

5️⃣ Celebrate Responsibly

Spring events, formals and social gatherings increase this time of year.

• Know your limits.
• Use designated drivers or ride-share services.
• Travel together and leave together.
• Report concerning behavior immediately.
