KETTERING, OHIO - May 12, 2026 - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the City of Kettering $1.7 million through its Lead Hazard Reduction Grant and Healthy Homes Grant programs, strengthening the City's efforts to protect children and families from dangerous home-based environmental hazards.
This significant federal investment will allow Kettering to identify and remove lead-based paint hazards in eligible homes, particularly those occupied by or frequently visited by children under the age of six. Lead exposure is especially dangerous for young children.
"These grant funds give Kettering the ability to directly assist families, improve the safety of our housing stock and ensure healthier futures," said Tom Robillard, Planning & Development Director.
How the Funding Will Be Used
The $1.7 million in grant funds will support:
Priority will be given to low- and moderate-income households and homes where children under age 6 live or spend significant time.
Why Lead Safety Matters
Lead-based paint is the most common source of household lead exposure, especially in homes built before 1978. Disturbances from renovation, chipping paint or deteriorating surfaces can release lead dust that is invisible but easily ingested or inhaled by children.
Early intervention-and safe housing-are the most effective strategies for preventing childhood lead poisoning.
