Chicago Department of Housing To Open Emergency Heating Repair Program

With colder weather around the corner, the Chicago Department of Housing (DOH) is opening applications up for the Emergency Heating Repair Program (EHRP) on November 1.

EHRP offers direct assistance to repair or replace homeowners' furnace or boiler heating system. Qualified contractors perform the work at no cost to the homeowner with funding provided through DOH. The assistance is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

"DOH is committed to supporting homeowners' ability to maintain a safe and healthy home," said DOH Commissioner Lissette CastaƱeda. "Programs like EHRP are vital to helping all residents have the option to age in place, especially in months where they face greater risks."

Property owners must reside at the property and be income eligible. Households earning 80% or less of the area median income (AMI) are eligible to participate in the program. The total gross income of all owners and other household members will be included and many not exceed this limit.

Interested homeowners can apply via:

  • CHI311 online
  • Calling 311, the City's service line

A homeowner who does not have an email address or access to a computer can call 311 to be sent a paper application package by mail. Completed paper applications can be returned to the Chicago Department of Housing.

In 2024, EHRP completed 157 repairs and replacements for Chicago homeowners.
