The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI), chaired by Deputy Malcolm Byrne, will meet to discuss the first in a series of modules focused on justice and law enforcement on Tuesday, the 3rd of March, at 11.00 am in Committee Room 4.
The Committee will hear from officials from An Garda Síochána and the Policing and Community Safety Authority.
Speaking before the meeting, the Cathaoirleach Deputy Malcolm Byrne said:
"Speaking to our witnesses to date from the public sector, AI has begun assisting the modernisation and fast tracking of our public services. However, as the Committee learnt during our democracy and truth modules, AI brings with it a host of security issues including misinformation and the potential for criminality activity to hide in the online world. Ensuring we can trust and police the use of AI is of the utmost importance.
Our public sector officials this week will discuss leveraging AI's capabilities to police the digital world and AI, including using AI to safeguard our police force by reducing their exposure to harmful material and protecting citizens from online abuse material. As a Committee we look forward to discussing the potential AI has in assisting our justice system and An Garda Síochána while maintaining the core principles of our public service bodies and the public's trust in these institutions."
The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The Committee meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV. Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
