Recreational Trails Program Grant Application - Public Notice

Project Title:
RTP Grant Application - Winter Trails UTV Groomer

Organization Name:
Chugach Backcountry Freeriders

Date Public Notice Posted:
September 30, 2025 Posted Online: October 07, 2025

Brief Description of Proposed Project:
Snowtrails are vital to Girdwood, Portage, Trail Lake, Hope and Cooper Landing. This grant will support winter trail and parking maintenance through the acquisition of a UTV equipped with tracks. The Chugach Backcountry Freeriders, a local non-profit, work with State and Federal agencies, contractors, Forest Service permittees, Alaska DOT and Alaska State Parks to keep these areas accessible.
Funding from the RTP grant would enable the organization to acquire a cab UTV on tracks with a plow and groomer; & offset costs associated with trail marking, administration, light plowing & general maintenance. Trails that may benefit from this acquisition are Spencer Glacier, Granite Creek and Johnson Pass, Palmer Creek, Old Sterling Highway, Snug Harbor, and Crescent / Carter Lakes.
