Atrium executive Johnson to address grads at fall commencement

Rashard Johnson, a healthcare executive who until two months ago was the leader of four local Atrium hospitals, will provide words of wisdom and motivation during Wingate University's Fall Commencement Dec. 13.

Johnson has a long history of improving healthcare systems around the country. Until his recent appointment as president of Atrium Health Navicent in Georgia, Johnson oversaw Atrium's Pineville, Union, Union West and Anson hospitals. He is recognized for his hands-on approach to hospital management and collaborative leadership style.

"Rashard brings a joy and purpose to his work that is truly contagious, and his journey - from his early life experiences to his extraordinary contributions in healthcare - continues to inspire all who know him," said Wingate President, Rhett Brown. "Rashard is a dynamic leader who has spent years giving back through service on the boards of the March of Dimes and the YMCA, and he continues to make an impact as a dedicated Wingate trustee. We are honored to welcome him as our Commencement speaker and grateful for the example he sets for our graduates."

Wingate's commencement will take place at 10 a.m. on Dec. 13 in Cuddy Arena. More than 300 students will receive undergraduate and graduate degrees during the ceremony.

In October, Johnson was named Atrium Health Navicent's president. Johnson leads the health system's facilities in central Georgia, including The Medical Center in Macon, Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin in Milledgeville, and Atrium Health Navicent Peach in Byron.

Johnson has also served as CEO for Emory Decatur Hospital, Emory Hillandale Hospital, and Emory Long Term Acute Care in the Atlanta area, and led Advocate South Suburban Hospital and Advocate Trinity Hospital in the Chicago area.

Previously, he served as vice president of operations and chief operating officer for CHI St. Luke's Health-The Woodlands, Lakeside, and Springwoods Village hospitals in Greater Houston, Texas. Prior to CHI St. Luke's, Johnson served five years as the assistant vice president of support services for UT Southwestern University Hospitals and Clinics in Dallas.

Johnson earned a master's degree in healthcare administration from the University of Central Florida. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the National Association of Health Services Executives. He also dedicates his time and talent to several nonprofit boards, including the Wingate University Board of Trustees.
