ZJU upgrades campus emergency response system: AED Digital Map now live across campus

On the morning of December 4, 2025, Zhejiang University officially launched its new campus emergency response system at the Zijingang Campus. The much-anticipated digital map for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) also went live at the same time. Through equipment expansion, digital integration, and widespread skills training, the initiative builds a "golden four-minute" lifesaving network to better protect the safety of all students and staff, making campus emergency response both warmer and more efficient.

ZJU Vice President LI Xiaoming noted that "the health and safety of our students and faculty are the fundamental prerequisite for the University's high-quality development." SAHZU (The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine) emphasized its commitment to bringing more high-quality medical resources to campus to safeguard the health of the University community. On one hand, emergency medicine specialists will take part in emergency skills training to help students and staff quickly master practical techniques; on the other hand, the hospital will further streamline the green-channel referral process, ensuring that campus emergency response remains both professional and time-efficient.

The event was hosted by SAHZU (ZJU Campus Branch), and representatives from multiple university departments, AED donors, and the SAHZU management team attended the launch ceremony.

Digital empowerment: lifesaving equipment at your fingertips

As the highlight of this upgrade, the AED Digital Map offers convenient features such as "one-click navigation" and real-time updates. In the event of sudden cardiac arrest or other emergencies on campus, users can simply open "Zhedading" (ZJU DingTalk) to locate the nearest AED instantly. This effectively resolves long-standing challenges such as difficulty locating devices and delays during urgent rescue, bridging the "last meter" of lifesaving support.

With the addition of 150 new AED units, integrated with the original 24, the Zijingang Campus now has 174 AEDs. These lifesaving devices are strategically placed across academic buildings, residence halls, libraries, dining halls, sports facilities, the auditorium, and administrative offices, forming a wide-coverage, well-distributed Four-Minute Rescue Zone that ensures emergency equipment is always within reach.

System support: ensuring everyone can use AEDs

To ensure that AEDs are truly usable by all, ZJU has simultaneously launched a five-year emergency skills training plan featuring "two full coverages."

The university will achieve full training coverage among key groups such as security personnel, logistics staff, residence hall managers, dining hall staff, and all incoming undergraduates, supported by a biennial refresher mechanism to reinforce learning.

At the same time, emergency skills training will be expanded to every school and department, establishing a standardized and systematic training framework and supporting each academic unit in building its own emergency volunteer team, so that lifesaving capacity is present in every corner of campus.

On-Site training: gaining real emergency skills

Immediately following the launch ceremony, the first session of the "High-Quality Emergency Skills Training Program - Winter 2025" began. Emergency specialists from SAHZU and professional instructors from the ZJU Health Service Center jointly led the training, using a combination of lectures and hands-on practice. Participants, including students, logistics personnel, and security staff, were guided in small groups to practice Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED operation. The learning atmosphere was highly engaging, and many participants said they were able to quickly grasp the practical skills.

"I always thought emergency skills were difficult to learn, but after practicing with the instructors, I actually mastered them!" one student shared excitedly. "If I encounter an emergency in the future, I won't feel helpless anymore."

This upgrade to ZJU's campus emergency response system, together with the launch of the AED Digital Map, strengthens the University's safety infrastructure and reinforces a solid line of defense for life on campus.
