The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.
Below are some tips and projects they are working on:
Preparing School Zones for the Upcoming School Year
As the new school year approaches, the City of League City is actively preparing all school zone areas to ensure the safety of students, parents, and commuters.
City crews are currently inspecting and servicing all school zone flashers, signage, and pavement markings. These efforts are essential to confirm that each piece of equipment is not blocked by vegetation and in proper working condition after remaining dormant during the summer break.
Residents will notice many school zone flashers activating on August 8, which is three days prior to the official start of most schools. This early activation period allows staff to conduct final checks and make any necessary adjustments, ensuring everything operates smoothly for the first day back.
In addition to flasher readiness, staff are also updating programming on both school zone flashers and traffic signals to reflect the adjusted traffic patterns that accompany the school year.
We kindly remind all drivers to be especially alert and cautious in school zones and to obey all posted speed limits and signals. Your cooperation helps keep our students and community safe.
Thank you for your continued support as we prepare for a safe and successful start to the school year.
Ready for Summer Leak Demand Response
As temperatures rise, the Line Repair department is gearing up to handle the increased demand that comes with the summer heat. This is the time of year when water leaks become more common, often occurring near residential meters due to root intrusion or shifting ground.
Our crews are prepared and ready to respond. Trained repair technicians are on hand to support both system maintenance and customer inquiries.
If you notice standing or running water, please report it by calling 281-554-1390 - available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We're here to help and will work quickly to resolve the issue.
Water Quality - Distribution System Management
High summer temperatures can significantly impact water quality in distribution systems. As water sits in mains or service lines during hot weather, it can warm up quickly, especially in areas with shallow infrastructure. Elevated water temperatures may accelerate chemical reactions, leading to faster disinfectant residual decay and increased potential for microbial growth. Warmer water can also cause changes in taste and odor, and in some cases, may amplify the presence of naturally occurring minerals or compounds. Additionally, stagnant water in low-use areas can further degrade water quality during extreme heat. To mitigate these effects, The City of League City's water production team has increased system monitoring, flushing lines more frequently, and has adjusted treatment processes as needed to ensure safe and reliable water delivery during the summer months
To help combat these seasonal effects, homeowners can take a few simple steps:
Inspection and Repair on Link-Belt
Fleet Maintenance works on various equipment to ensure departments have the equipment to perform daily functions. This Link-Belt unit was brought to the shop for routine maintenance, plus a hydraulic leak. Some issues were discovered while in for the required inspection and maintenance. The A/C unit was found not to be cooling correctly. The compressor was inoperable and needed replacement. For the hydraulic leak, Fleet found that the O-rings were worn, and replacement was necessary for the repair. Fleet also decided to install an isolator to secure the hydraulic lines.
