WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) and Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement Chairman Michael Guest (R-MS) released the following statements on the upcoming visit by Democrat members of the Committee to the Southwest border:
"It's no coincidence that Committee Democrats are choosing to visit the border after President Trump cleaned up the mess created by the Biden administration. The American people will not forget how congressional Democrats turned a blind eye as their own party created the worst border crisis in U.S. history. When the Committee held a field hearing in 2023 in Pharr, Texas, no Democrat members attended. My counterpart, Mr. Thompson, even repeatedly called hearings about the border crisis a waste of time," Chairman Green said. "While the visit tomorrow comes years too late, I am grateful Democrats will be drawing attention to the law and order that the Trump administration has and will continue to restore. They will have the opportunity to witness the rising morale of our CBP personnel, who now have the needed support to do their jobs. It clearly was this easy to end the crisis--Democrats just didn't want to."
"For the last four years, we have encouraged our Democratic Committee members to see firsthand the chaos caused by President Joe Biden and his failed border policies," Chairman Guest said. "I am glad that this weekend they will have the opportunity to see what a secure border looks like thanks to the hard work of President Trump and his administration."
Background:
On January 20, 2025 , President Trump signed executive orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border, reestablishing border wall construction, ending catch-and-release, resuming the Migrant Protection Protocols, beginning the process of designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and ending mass parole at ports of entry.
Under President Trump, Southwest border encounters have plummeted to new lows. Last month, only 7,180 illegal aliens were encountered between ports of entry along the Southwest border--the lowest monthly total in five decades and a 95-percent drop compared to March 2024. For comparison, under Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Alejandro Mayorkas, nearly 250,000 illegal aliens crossed the Southwest border between ports of entry in December 2023, an all-time high.
The homeland security catastrophe created by the Biden-Harris administration allowed fentanyl and illegal aliens to take the lives of innocent Americans. Amid the visit this week, the trial for the accused murderer of Rachel Morin, a mother of five whose life was brutally taken as a consequence of the border crisis, also begins. The immense damage caused by Democrats' open-borders policies can't be fully undone, but this Committee is working tirelessly, alongside the Trump administration, to ensure it never happens again.
Last year , Patty Morin, Rachel Morin's mother, testified before the Committee. In her opening statement, Morin described how the open border allowed her daughter's killer in and continued to put Americans across the country in danger:
"It took 10 months for them to find this suspect--the illegal immigrant. They used DNA because this man had attacked a nine-year-old and her mother in Los Angeles… They say that the borders are safe. We live 1,800 miles away from the Southern border. They're not safe. They're not safe. Do you have a sanctuary city in your state? You're not safe… She's the American mom, and she's not the only one in our cities that have been murdered… They are bringing criminals into our country. They are allowing them into our smallest towns, and our people are dying."
