Prime Minister Støre met with President Zelensky in Kyiv

'Norway supports Ukraine in its fight for freedom and in the efforts to achieve a lasting peace. It was important for me to extend my visit by an extra day, among other things, to have the opportunity to meet with President Zelensky separately to discuss issues of relevance to our two countries. We had a very constructive meeting. I reassured President Zelensky that Norway stands firm in its support for Ukraine,' said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

During the meeting, President Zelensky thanked Norway for its support and emphasised the importance of close cooperation with European partners.

Strategic partnership

The two leaders agreed to develop a strategic partnership between Norway and Ukraine, and defence and energy were mentioned as key areas for further cooperation.

'Norway and Ukraine are already working closely together in a range of areas, and it is clear that companies in our two countries have a great deal to learn from each other. We are seeking to develop this cooperation further,' said Mr Støre.

Two-day visit

Mr Støre is on a two-day visit to Ukraine to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Norway is a major donor to Ukraine, providing military, humanitarian and political support. During his visit, Mr Støre announced how Norway's military support for Ukraine in 2026 is to be used. He also reaffirmed that Norway will continue to provide support to help secure access to electricity and heating for people in Ukraine, despite Russia's systematic bombing of the critical infrastructure needed for energy production.

'I am very pleased to be in Ukraine again even though the backdrop to the visit is bleak. It is now four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, and the strain on Ukraine's leaders and its people has been under enormous. They have shown incredible resilience and resolve throughout the war. It is important for Norway to maintain a close dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities so that we can target our support towards meeting Ukraine's actual needs,' said Mr Støre.

Meeting with the Prime Minister

During a working lunch with Prime Minister Julija Svyrydenko, Mr Støre received a briefing on how the Ukrainian authorities are working systematically to secure access to electricity and heating for people in Ukraine.

'Ukrainians are working in innovative ways to replace energy infrastructure that has been destroyed and to develop a more decentralised power system that is less vulnerable to Russia's attacks,' said Mr Støre.
