BLM, Sheriff’s Department Conduct Joint OHV Safety Operation

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Law enforcement rangers from the Bureau of Land Management Barstow Field Office and deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Morongo Basin Station worked side by side during a joint off-highway vehicle enforcement operation at the Sunfair Dry Lakebed near Twentynine Palms.

BLM rangers and sheriff's deputies participated in the operation, which targeted an area near Joshua Tree National Park that has long faced issues with unsafe and illegal vehicle use endangering both visitors and natural resources.

During the enforcement effort, BLM rangers recovered 20 weapons, including firearms that were stolen, had serial numbers removed, or were in the possession of a convicted felon. Removing illegal firearms from public lands reduces immediate risk and disrupts criminal activity before it escalates.

Together, rangers and deputies made 150 contacts with riders and drivers, issued 14 warnings and 15 citations, and towed seven vehicles. Officers made arrests for driving under the influence, outstanding warrants, drug possession, resisting arrest, and felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Joint operations like this keep the community safe and protect desert resources, while also showing taxpayers that their public safety dollars are being used effectively. By combining their time, skills, and equipment, rangers and deputies make these popular recreation areas safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Visitors are reminded that compliance with all state and federal laws, including those governing firearm use and possession, is required on public lands. The BLM encourages all OHV riders to stay on designated routes, follow posted rules, and help protect the desert environment so it remains healthy for generations to come.
