New lease of life for former Kirkstyle Primary School

Lowland Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association (LRFCA) intend to purchase the building now that it has been declared surplus to requirements by the Council, and it will be used as the new HQ for the West Lowland Battalion of the Army Cadets since their current site in Ayr is no longer deemed fit for purpose. The organisation has also committed to supporting community use and access to the building once the centre is up and running.

Kirkstyle Primary initially closed after its pupils transferred to the newly completed Whatriggs Primary School in August 2017 and the building was then used to accommodate pupils from Loanhead, Crosshouse, and St Sophia's Primary Schools while their buildings were refurbished, with the last pupils moving out in June 2025.

Most recently the building has been used to accommodate Take a Bow while its premises in New Farm Loch were redeveloped. The Council will continue to use parts of the property to minimise the time that it is lying empty until the sale can be concluded.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council, said: "This is very welcome news for Kilmarnock. Seeing the former school brought back into full use by Lowland Reserve Forces and Cadets will deliver community benefits as well as ensure that the building does not lie empty."

Veterans' Champion Councillor Jim Todd added: "The Cadets do fantastic work, particularly with young people, and this new home will give them a strong base for the future. I wish them every success in their new premises."

David Pettigrew, Deputy Chief Executive of the LRFCA said: "Lowland Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association is delighted to be working in partnership with East Ayrshire Council to bring the West Lowland Battalion Army Cadet Force and its regional training centre to this new location at the former Kirkstyle Primary School.
