IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 9, 2026 Chairwoman Barela on the Safer Community Places Ordinance signed yesterday by Mayor Tim Keller Albuquerque, NM - Yesterday, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller signed the Safer Community Places Ordinance, embolding the city's Sanctuary City policies. This ordinance restricts federal immigration enforcement in certain places in Albuquerque such as shelters, places of worship, hospitals, and schools. RPNM Chairwoman Amy Barela releases the following statement: "This ordinance will only serve to draw dangerous individuals into Albuquerque," said Chairwoman Barela. "We cannot create a sanctuary environment and expect public safety to improve at the same time. Mayor Tim Keller's record on crime has been widely criticized, even by his own acknowledgment, so it's difficult to understand why he would prioritize this policy over the safety of Albuquerque's residents. Not long ago, our Democrat Governor found it necessary to deploy the National Guard to address rising crime due to the city's ongoing challenges. This decision will further undermine public safety and place an even greater burden on law-abiding New Mexicans." ### |
