CU offers day camp for aspiring engineers

Older teenagers with an interest in an engineering career are invited to take part in a summer day camp happening later this month at Cameron University.

The Department of Chemistry, Physics and Engineering will host the two-day camp from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 29-30 in the Sciences Complex on Cameron's Lawton campus. Only a limited number of campers will be accepted.

Intended for high school students in pre-engineering programs, the camp will utilize hands-on activities supervised by faculty to introduce students to computer-aided design and truss structure concepts. Campers will learn how to design a bridge using CAD tools, then return the following day to strength-test their designs after being 3-D printed in the university's new engineering lab. Faculty will also provide a preview of Cameron's new four-year mechanical engineering degree program that has begun accepting students for the fall.

"Engineering is about creativity, teamwork and solving real-world problems," said Dr. Kyle Moore, the department chair. "This two-day camp gives high school students the opportunity to experience those challenges firsthand while working with CU faculty and students. We hope participants leave inspired and excited about the possibilities that a future in engineering with Cameron can offer."

There is no charge to participate in the camp. The university will provide all project supplies and equipment, and lunch will be provided both days. Campers should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. to sign in.
