In November, four Boise State accounting students participated in the Deloitte FanTAXtic case competition. In this national competition, student teams analyze and present solutions for complex business tax cases. The competition is an invite-only event open to select schools, and this was the first time Boise State was invited to take part.
The Department of Accountancy selected top students Alex Gales, Cameron Hooker, Parker Slazyk and Riley Suckling to represent the university. As they worked on the case, the team was mentored by professionals at Deloitte's Boise office.
"Through this competition I was able to improve my critical thinking skills, learn how to create an effective tax presentation, improve my professionalism, become a better group member, and also obtain valuable experience that will help with my future career in public accounting," Hooker said in a LinkedIn post.
Although they did not advance to nationals, it was an excellent effort for a first-time team.
"I'm so proud of our student team. They were up against schools who have been competing in the event for many years. It usually takes a few years of competing before a school gains the experience to advance," said Distinguished Professor of Accountancy Mark Cowan. "Thanks to the students for having the courage to be our first team in this national competition and for representing Boise State's accountancy program and COBE so well. They have proven that Boise State deserves to be included in these national Big Four competitions."
Looking ahead, this year's participants plan to coach the next team in preparation for future competitions.
