NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (July 17, 2026) - The City of New Brunswick continues to call on all residents who own or operate electric bicycles and electric scooters to familiarize themselves with New Jersey's new statewide e-bike and e-scooter safety law, taking effect this Sunday, July 19.
Under the new law, all e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) before Sunday. All riders must carry valid insurance and possess either a driver's license or a permit. Riders under 15 years of age are prohibited from operating these vehicles entirely. Those between the ages of 15 and 16 must hold a valid permit, while riders 17 and older must have a driver's license. Helmets must be worn.
E-bikes are defined under the law as two-wheeled vehicles with pedals, a pedal-assist motor and a top speed not exceeding 20 mph. E-scooters are defined as two-wheeled, standing-platform vehicles powered by an electric motor with a top speed not exceeding 19 mph.
Certain throttle-assisted or higher-speed models will also require liability insurance. The law also bans the sale of e-bike modification kits and temporarily halts the online sale of motorized e-bikes.
All are encouraged to review the new requirements and ensure they are in compliance before the law takes effect. For more information or to register an e-bike, visit the
NJMVC website.
