The City of Independence and the Human Relations Commission selected former Mayor Eileen Weir and West iNd Connection as the recipients of the 2026 Independence Champion of Non-Discrimination (ICON) Awards.
The ICON Awards recognize individuals and organizations whose leadership, service, and advocacy have helped create a more inclusive, welcoming, and equitable community. Established by the Human Relations Commission, the awards support the Commission's mission of fostering mutual respect, understanding, and opportunity for all who live, work, and visit Independence.
The 2026 recipients represent two distinct but equally important forms of community leadership: public service and grassroots action.
Former Mayor Eileen Weir is being recognized for her longstanding commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and equal opportunity in Independence. During her tenure, she championed initiatives designed to address inequities within the community, supported the formation of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee that later became part of the Human Relations Commission, and advocated for policies that expanded protections and opportunities for residents. Even after leaving office, Weir has remained an active voice for inclusion through regional advocacy and community service.
West iNd Connection is being recognized for its ongoing work creating welcoming spaces and meaningful connections for LGBTQ+ individuals, marginalized communities, and their allies. Through programs including the WiNc Inclusion Center and Bookstore and the WiNc Community Garden & Orchard, the organization has fostered a sense of belonging, reduced barriers to participation, and strengthened community connections throughout Independence. Powered largely by volunteers, West iNd Connection continues to demonstrate how grassroots leadership can create lasting positive change.
The awards will be presented during Pride in Englewood on Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at the Englewood Arts Center.
Residents are invited to join the Human Relations Commission in celebrating the recipients and their contributions to a more connected and inclusive Independence.
