Durbin Statement On Senate Republicans Approving $140 Billion To Fund ICE & Border Patrol

As prices continue to rise, Durbin denounced Republicans' misplaced priorities to fund Trump's mass deportation campaign

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement after Senate Republicans passed their budget resolution, which will allow them to provide up to $140 billion for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP):

"In the middle of the night, Senate Republicans voted to give ICE-an agency that has carried out unspeakable cruelty against children, immigrant families, and even American citizens-billions of dollars to continue the President's mass deportation campaign.

"At a time when Americans are struggling to afford gas, groceries, child care, and much more, Senate Republicans proved they care more about President Trump's wishes than the needs of Americans. Senate Democrats will continue to hold them accountable and fight for American families."

During the voting series, Senate Democrats offered various amendments to lower costs and address the affordability crisis. Senate Republicans blocked every single amendment Senate Democrats offered. Those amendments included lowering out-of-pocket health care costs; reversing cuts to SNAP and reducing grocery prices; stopping insurance companies from delaying or denying care; expanding access to school meals; lowering costs driven by tariffs and the war in Iran; addressing rising electricity prices; lowering prescription drug prices; and more.
