NATO High Level Group discusses nuclear deterrence ahead of June NPG meeting

On Wednesday (6 May 2026) the NATO High Level Group, the senior advisory body to NATO's Nuclear Planning Group (NPG), met in Brussels. The meeting helped prepare for the June 2026 meeting of the NPG, where Allies will discuss the role of NATO's nuclear capabilities in preserving peace, preventing coercion, and deterring aggression.

Allies reaffirmed the essential role of nuclear deterrence in NATO's overall strategy, emphasising nuclear consultation as a cornerstone of NATO's nuclear policy and a continued commitment to maintaining peace and preventing conflict through a safe, secure, and effective nuclear posture.

The High Level Group continues its efforts to strengthen NATO's nuclear deterrence, improve transparency where appropriate, and ensure the Alliance communicates with unity and clarity its enduring commitment to deterrence and defence.
