ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL: KANE COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS IN PRISION, RESTITUTION TO VICTIM FOR THEFT BY DECEPTION

Chicago - Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced a Kane County man was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution for theft.

Kiwon Bates, 37, of Chicago, was sentenced by Kane County Associate Judge Salvatore LoPiccolo after pleading guilty to a Class 2 felony count of theft by deception. Bates will serve his prison sentence in Arizona, concurrently with a sentence in an unrelated case.

"Individuals who deliberately mislead others in order to ultimately steal must be held accountable," Raoul said. "I will continue to protect our communities from those who use deception as a means to steal from innocent victims."

This case was referred to Raoul's office by the Kane County State's Attorney's office.

Raoul's investigators determined that in March 2023 Bates knowingly deceived an individual into lending him money to pay his rent by falsely stating his bank account was frozen because someone used his banking card. He also stated that he was offered a contract to play for the Chicago Bears. Bates was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to the victim.

Assistant Attorney General Samantha Cain prosecuted the case for Raoul's Special Prosecution's Bureau.
