Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) started a significant renovation project at the Westside Community Center (WCC), aiming to improve accessibility and the guest experience.
"This renovation project is a vital step towards making the Westside Community Center a more inclusive and welcoming space," said Felicia Barnhart, WCC parks operations administrator. "By taking these steps, we are not only enhancing our facilities but expanding the opportunities available to everyone in our community."
In collaboration with the City's Office of Accessibility, the project includes several improvements to the main building to increase accessibility for program participants and visitors. These enhancements include a new entrance, a lift connecting the main floor to the lower level to provide access to the restrooms, and modifications to inside ramps for ADA compliance.
The project will replace the HVAC system as well as the roofs and gutters on all three campus buildings while installing air conditioning in the middle building and east cottages. Contractors plan to work around the existing WCC program schedule to limit closures and minimize disruption to community events. The renovation project is funded by $1.2 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and is expected to be completed by December 2025.
The Westside Community Center offers a variety of programs and activities to build a stronger, more connected neighborhood. The community center began operating as a public-private partnership in 2022 when the City of Colorado Springs started managing operations. This partnership allows for City staffing and funding while providing revenue-generating opportunities through external partners and nonprofit organizations.
