Block Parties Build Community
Block parties are a fun and easy way to connect with neighbors and strengthen community bonds. This year, Portlanders turned their streets into safe spaces where kids could play, lawn games popped up, street murals were painted, and potlucks and BBQs brought people together.
In 2025 alone, 777 block parties were hosted across Portland-thanks in part to the new and improved Block Party Permitform designed by PDX311, the Bureau of Technology Services, and the Portland Bureau of Transportation. The reimagined application launched in March 2025 and made it easier than ever to host a party on City streets.
Bigger Events, Better Access
Block parties weren't the only highlight. Farmers markets, street fairs, cultural events, and fundraisers also benefited from an upgraded online Community Event Permit application(launched in November 2024). The new system streamlined the process for larger community events, making it easier to bring people together.
For many neighborhoods, the ability to temporarily close streets, sidewalks, or parking spaces is essential for building resilience, showcasing community identity, boosting local economies, and supporting microenterprises. These larger events require more planning and coordination, but the effort pays off-164 community events were successfully permitted in 2025.
Looking Ahead
By reimagining forms and simplifying the application process, the City is making it easier for Portlanders to host events that bring joy, strengthen connections, and celebrate community. Here's to even more block parties, markets, and cultural events in the years to come!
