Gilbert Police Department Back to School Safety

Gilbert, Ariz. - As the 2025-2026 school year begins, the Gilbert Police Department is stepping up efforts to ensure every student's journey to and from school is a safe one.

Beginning this week, residents will notice an increased presence of officers around schools in Gilbert. The department's proactive approach includes heightened traffic enforcement, educational outreach, and community engagement initiatives, all aimed at preventing promoting a safe school year.

School Safety Tips:

  • Watch for children walking and riding their bike to school. Small children can be harder to see
  • Follow the posted speed limit in and around school zones
  • Be alert! Avoid distractions in high-traffic areas
  • Do not enter a crosswalk until you see the roadway is completely clear
  • Always yield to stopped school buses Not all electric two-wheelers are created equal.

E-Bike Safety:

Not all electric two-wheelers are created equal. While e-bikes and electric motor-driven cycles ("e-motos") may look alike, they're governed by very different laws in Arizona and come with different responsibilities.

  • An electric bicycle is a bicycle or tricycle that is equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than seven hundred fifty watts
  • Bikes without fully operable pedals with speeds of upwards of 28 miles per hour depending on the class are considered e-motos and require the rider to have a motorcycle license, an ADOT-provided plate, registration, and insurance to legally operate
