SAVANNAH - The Georgia Department of Transportation is continuing to monitor and treat routes in Candler, Screven, Bulloch, Effingham, Bryan and Chatham Counties that had snow and ice this weekend in southeast Georgia.
State routes and interstates in Georgia DOT's District Five are passable and drying; however, hazardous and icy conditions persist in the district's impacted areas. Georgia DOT crews are continuing to work around the clock to plow and treat routes with salt and other materials as needed. Staff and equipment were mobilized to the required areas ahead of the storm.
Crews are diligently working to apply needed materials on the roadway during warmer daytime hours to achieve a positive result as temperatures drop overnight. Motorists who must be on the road today are advised to give crews ample space as they work.
Drivers are strongly urged to continue avoiding non-essential travel throughout Sunday. Minimal traffic on the roads will help Georgia DOT treat more roadways, resulting in a better Monday morning commute.
To stay up to date on road conditions and closures, visit 511ga.com, call 511 to speak with an operator, or download the 511 app. If your vehicle becomes stranded on the interstate, stay calm and in your vehicle and call 511 for CHAMP assistance. Georgia DOT's CHAMP program is a free roadside assistance to maximize safety on Georgia's highways.
