Sen. Rick Scott Visits Greece to Discuss NATO Security and Economic Cooperation with Greek Leaders

ATHENS, Greece - This week, U.S. Senator Rick Scott, member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, traveled to Greece and met with Greek government leaders to discuss the U.S.-Greco alliance and America's national security and economic interests in the Mediterranean. During his meetings, Senator Scott shared his goals for the U.S. and Greece to strengthen their collective security in Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean, enhance NATO cooperation among allies committed to the alliance's collective security, and deter Russian aggression.

In Greece, Senator Scott met with members of the Greek Parliament, leadership of the Hellenic Coast Guard, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Energy and Environment Minister Stavros Papastavrou, Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Dimitrios Choupis, and Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis.

Senator Rick Scott said, "Greece is a crucial NATO ally, a reliable and credible partner to the United States, and our strategic relationship is actively reshaping the security and energy dynamics in Europe to advance American interests. Greece is the birthplace of democracy, and my meetings with leaders this week underscored Greece's commitment to the United States and standing up against threats posed by the thuggish leaders in Russia and Turkey. America First requires a strong NATO, and Greece is a great example of the leadership America wants to see in Europe. Through our alliance, we are securing Southeast Europe, bolstering our own defenses, and ensuring the free world never bows to the tyranny of Putin and Erdogan."

During his trip, Senator Scott also stopped in Cyprus to meet with Cypriot officials focused on economic cooperation, energy projects, deterring Turkish aggression, and securing full sovereignty for the Republic of Cyprus.

As a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, Senator Scott shares President Trump's focus on ensuring NATO allies continue to meet their domestic and international security obligations in Europe and will work closely with America's allies and their leaders to support U.S. national security interests, including energy independence and combating the threat of Russian aggression.

Earlier this month, Senator Scott and Dr. Rebeccah Heinrichs, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, penned an op-ed in The Hill titled, "If America wants to prosper, we must lead."
