DUBUQUE, Iowa - The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium will launch guided Mississippi River canoe excursions beginning May 23.
Excursions depart Thursdays and Saturdays at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. through Labor Day. Each 14-foot cedar Voyageur canoe accommodates up to eight participants and two guides.
The three-hour trips explore Mud Lake in Dubuque County, traveling down the main channel and returning through a backwater slough within the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The leisurely pace allows participants time to observe wildlife, ask questions and take part in hands-on educational activities focused on the refuge, its ecosystems and conservation efforts. The excursions offer a chance to experience the Mississippi River from the water while gaining a deeper understanding of how it has shaped both communities and habitats along its shores.
"The Mississippi is more than a river. It's part of a larger living system," said Codi Sharkey, conservation programs manager. "When people experience that system firsthand, they begin to see how everything is connected. The health of the river is tied to the health of the entire watershed, and we hope these excursions inspire a deeper appreciation for the river and a stronger sense of stewardship for its future."
Participants may reserve either a half or full canoe, and no prior paddling experience is required. Safety instruction is provided at the start of each excursion. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Advance registration is now open, and early booking is encouraged as space is limited.
