WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) delivered a speech on the U.S. Senate floor calling out Senate Democrats for undermining the Senate's standard operating procedure by blocking every single one of President Trump's nominees from being confirmed by unanimous consent or voice vote.
"Democrats are obsessed with finding every way possible to undermine the President and his agenda, no matter the cost,"said Dr. Cassidy.
"Americans are sick of it. They want Congress to work. And Republicans are showing up to work," continued Dr. Cassidy.
Cassidy's remarks as prepared for delivery are below:
Mr. President,
Unfortunately, Democrats have become addicted to hating President Trump.
It is no longer about policy, or even strong disagreement-it is an obsession.
They are obsessed with finding every way possible to undermine the president and his agenda, whatever the cost.
What they have done to the nomination process in the Senate might be the height of their partisanship since President Trump returned to office.
Democrats have blocked 100% of President Trump's nominees from being confirmed by unanimous consent or voice vote.
Until now, that is how the majority of presidential nominees for both parties have been confirmed.
98% of Clinton's and George H.W. Bush's nominees.
90% of George W. Bush and Barack Obama's nominees.
Even President Biden got the majority of his nominees confirmed through unanimous consent or voice vote.
Let's put it in perspective.
We're speaking about non-controversial nominees. Again, something that has been consistent for presidents of both parties for decades.
Yet, here we are today, eight months into President Trump's second term, without a single nominee confirmed by unanimous consent or voice vote.
Zero.
And by the way, these nominees made it through committee with BIPARTISAN support on the record!
This is a full-blown example of Democrats not caring if the business of government doesn't get done.
They would rather obstruct a President trying to serve the American people.
Americans desperately want Congress to work. Republicans are showing up to work.
We're ready to confirm the people who keep our country running.
But Democrats are holding these nominees for ransom for no other reason except their hatred for Donald Trump.
And why do you think Congress always has such a low approval rating? Why do you think people feel this place doesn't work?
It's because of stunts like this that blow up the standard operating procedure of the Senate all to score cheap political points.
The American people chose President Trump.
They gave Republicans control of the House and Senate.
They told us the agenda they wanted us to pursue.
So, when Democrats dig in their heels, and kick and scream, all they are proving is that they did not hear the message the American People sent last November.
If no one's standing with you but your own party insiders and cable news hosts, then your resistance isn't brave-it's meaningless.
It's noise.
The American people deserve better. Republicans are ready to deliver.
With that, I yield.
