Shepherd University Students to Explore Challenges of Reentry to Society After Incarceration

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Shepherd University will give students a look at the barriers people face when returning to their communities after incarceration during an interactive simulation and lived-experience panel on Wednesday, September 16, in the Wellness Center.

The event will begin with a simulation from 1-3 p.m. During the exercise, students will navigate common reentry requirements and barriers as they seek housing, employment, financial stability, and access to essential services. By completing tasks at various stations, they will work toward the ultimate goal of maintaining their freedom.

Following the simulation, "The Reality of Reentry: A Lived Experience Panel" will take place from 3-4 p.m. Panelists will share their personal journeys, discuss the challenges and successes they encountered after incarceration, and answer questions from participants.

Throughout the afternoon, participants will gain insight into the realities of reentry while connecting with the organizations, agencies, and individuals that support successful reentry after incarceration.

The event is co-sponsored by the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of West Virginia and EastRidge Health Systems.
