From Read-Alouds to Playwriting: Philly Youth Bring Stories to Life

Philly Reading Coaches (PRC) is all about sparking a love of reading and empowering young readers to follow their own paths to finding that spark. Whether students connect with characters who reflect their own experiences, feel inspired to become writers or illustrators, or are simply hungry for an adventure, they are encouraged to pursue their own unique journey toward a lifelong love of reading.

To celebrate National Reading Month, Philly Reading Coaches (PRC) is hosting a series of events and programs designed to help students discover that connection. In honor of this year's theme, "Our Stories, Our Voices." Philly Young Playwrights is visiting PRC sites to guide students in bringing their ideas to life through playwriting, with performances that showcase their work.

In addition, authors Mark Darden, John Butler (Cousin John), and Alyssa Reynoso Morris are visiting schools for read-alouds and interactive activities that engage students and inspire imagination.

While conversations about education often focus on what students may be lacking, these experiences tell a different story. When students are given the opportunity to read aloud, draw, and share their ideas, their excitement and creativity fill the classroom. Students are eager to participate, raising their hands, asking for a turn to read, and proudly sharing their work.

During one visit to Edmonds Elementary School, a student shared, "All my life I wanted to meet an author, and now I can say it's finally been realized." Moments like these highlight the impact of giving students access to real-life storytellers and creative opportunities.

PRC focuses on building on students' strengths, their imagination, curiosity, and eagerness to learn. By creating supportive spaces where students feel confident sharing their voices, the program helps them grow as readers and thinkers.

Through experiences like these, PRC continues to empower the next generation of readers, making space for every student's story to be heard.
