Rebuilding Lives in Lebanon

The recent war between Israel and Lebanon has left southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and parts of the Bekaa Valley reeling from destruction. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, agricultural lands scorched, and critical infrastructure - water systems, roads, and electricity grids - have sustained severe damage, preventing the return of civilians. The World Bank estimates that the conflict has resulted in approximately $14 billion in physical damages and economic losses. In addition to the losses, the World Bank identified $11 billion needed for essential reconstruction and recovery. In South Lebanon alone, farmers saw their livelihoods vanish as tens of thousands of olive trees were destroyed and livestock perished due to unrelenting shelling and white phosphorus. The crisis has displaced thousands, forcing families to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere.

As Lebanon struggles to recover, the urgent need for humanitarian assistance cannot be overstated. To address this crisis, Anera, supported by the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund (LHF) and managed by UN OCHA, has launched a seven-month intervention: Life-saving Humanitarian Assistance to at least 22,000 Lebanese Persons. This initiative focuses on supporting displaced and vulnerable individuals in Tyre, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and Bint Jbeil, tackling urgent needs related to food security, hygiene, and access to safe water.

Addressing Immediate Needs in Tyre, South Lebanon

The war has left thousands of residents in Tyre without access to essential resources. In coordination with Lebanon's Ministry of Social Affairs, Anera's intervention will provide direct assistance to 1,100 vulnerable households, ensuring they receive three rounds of multisectoral cash assistance ($200 per household). Additionally, 200 food parcels and 200 family hygiene kits will be distributed to households identified as having critical vulnerabilities.

Beyond direct aid, the project prioritizes water infrastructure rehabilitation. Many public water points and supply schemes sustained damage during the war, leaving communities struggling with water shortages. Anera will conduct assessments and repairs to restore water access and support the South Lebanon Water Establishment with the materials necessary to maintain the water supply for affected communities.

Restoring Safe Water Access in the Southern Suburbs of Beirut and Bint Jbeil

Water scarcity remains a significant challenge in the southern suburbs of Beirut (Dahie), Mount Lebanon. Through this project, Anera will rehabilitate, repair, or install 30 communal potable water points. These water points will ensure access to clean drinking water for thousands of residents who have been struggling with deteriorating water infrastructure.

Meanwhile, in Bint Jbeil, Nabatieh, the war further exacerbated long-standing issues related to water storage. To alleviate this burden, Anera will assist 150 vulnerable households by repairing or replacing damaged water storage tanks. This initiative will enable families to store clean water safely, mitigating health risks and improving their overall well-being.

By combining cash assistance, food aid, hygiene support, and water infrastructure rehabilitation, Anera, with the support of LHF, is addressing both the immediate humanitarian needs and the long-term recovery of Lebanon's most vulnerable populations.
