Blackburn & Blumenthal Celebrate Commerce Committee Passage of Bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) released the following statement on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation's passage of the bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) by voice vote:

"For years, heartbroken parents have demanded Congress take action to protect America's children from Big Tech's exploitation, and today is a major victory for the courageous families who refused to give up," said Senators Blackburn and Blumenthal. "The Senate has repeatedly shown that there is broad, bipartisan support for a version of KOSA that creates a duty of care to protect kids from online predators, addictive algorithms, and harmful product design. We want to thank our large, diverse, and determined coalition for standing with us today, and we look forward to getting this bill to the President's desk."

BACKGROUND

• Senators Blackburn and Blumenthal first introduced KOSA in February 2022, following reporting by the Wall Street Journal and after spearheading a series of five subcommittee hearings with social media companies and advocates on the repeated failures by tech giants to protect kids on their platforms.

• The Senate version of KOSA would require platforms to enable the strongest privacy settings by default, force platforms to prevent and mitigate specific dangers to minors, provide parents and educators new controls to help protect children, and require independent audits and research into social media companies.
